WE ARE SCRIPTURAL

We Are Scriptural
We affirm that our beliefs and behavior should conform to the character of Jesus Christ and the teaching of God’s Word. Scripture is the inspired, infallible Word of God and the ultimate authority for salvation. Faithfully proclaiming the truth of God’s Word is essential to the life of the Church.
While holding to the Reformation principle of scriptural sufficiency, Anglicans emphasize interpreting Scripture through the lens of ancient Church tradition, the Seven Ecumenical Councils, and the sacraments.
Scripture and Tradition
Unlike a strict Sola Scriptura approach, Anglicans hold to Prima Scriptura and believe Scripture is best understood as interpreted by the Church’s historic tradition and creeds. It is part of a "three-legged stool" (Scripture, Tradition, and Reason) rather than standing in isolation.
The "Compass of Salvation"
Scripture is the authoritative "East point" of faith, working in conjunction with the sacraments (West), ministry (South), and Christ (North).
Liturgical Focus
Scripture is essential for prayer and public worship
Return to the Sources
Anglicans rely on Scripture and the Church Fathers to understand the faith.
Final Authority
Despite relying on tradition, Anglicans maintain that Scripture is the supreme authority that determines what qualifies as authentic development in the Church.
How Christians Should Interpret Scripture
Before we can meaningfully discuss any doctrine of the Church, we must first understand how to read Scripture faithfully. Christians throughout history have understood that doctrine is not invented—it is discovered by drawing out what God has already revealed. But the method we use will determine whether we arrive at the Truth, or at a conclusion shaped by our own culture, assumptions, and denominational background. If we do not grasp this foundational truth, our attempts to understand Scripture, the sacraments, or any doctrine, will be distorted from the start.
